inspired by colorful beds

 Calendula officinalis
 also know as Pot Marigold
uses include medicinal, cosmetic & culinary
easy to grow, propagate from seed sown in autumn or spring
once know as "poor mans saffron" as the petals dried or fresh add color to rice dishes and salads
The courtyard where we have the Aquaponics setup is protected so while the nights have been cool our winter days have still been warm. The grow beds are currently filled with marigolds, watercress, sweet basil, sweet peas, cos lettuce & Asian greens. I couldn't resist capturing a few shots of the colorful marigolds.

Leaf of marjoram, citronella lantern, paper flowers, a lady beetle, a white picket fence and

Taking a moment to enjoy natures' gifts, I noticed the bud forming yesterday and it bloomed overnight. The flower is so delicate and elegant; it reminds me of precious china. A beautiful flower that usually only lasts one to two days.

simple pleasures

Taking time to enjoy the simple pleasures the peach rose at the top was at New Farm Park as was the flowering grass. The orchid in the middle and the red rose are in our garden and the white flower at the bottom looked so spectacular along the river banks, we spotted it while out enjoying a stroll on the boardwalk in front of the old woolstores in New Farm.

pumpkin soup a winter warmer

We usually have a couple of pumpkin vines rambling about the yard in the warmer months
So we can enjoy homemade pumpkin soup in the cooler months
usually accompanied with fresh bread from the local bakery
yum!

zygocactus in flower

Each season brings new enjoyments - we're currently enjoying the flowering Zygocactus. We started with a coral coloured Zygocactus, which I featured in my first blog posting - our collection now includes a purple variety (top picture) and a white variety (bottom image). We're not sure what the middle plant is - it's been one of the many surprises we've found as part of renovating our humble home and garden.

Orchid in flower

We enjoyed a public holiday here in Brisbane yesterday, for our show day otherwise know as the 'Ekka' it finishes this weekend. I spent pretty much most the day in the studio working on my pieces for our up-coming exhibition - "Undercurrents". While enjoying a cuppa break, I noticed that one of our orchids is flowering. We've been in our humble home for about five years now and it's the first time we've seen this orchid flower. At some stage I'll work out which variety of orchid it is, it will be good to have the photos as a reference.

a garden full of flowers and food

My weekly photos this week are of a few of the natural delights that we are enjoying in our garden at the moment following the recent rain. Late this afternoon we picked and enjoyed a bowl of fresh strawberries then picked some corn, Asian greens and dug up some fresh ginger for tonights' stir fry.
It really is a great time of the year
