almost time to shop, plan a menu and dust off decorations

http://www.redbubble.com/people/melforrest/shop

images available on cards, prints, cases and mugs

Where has this year gone? It's hard to believe it's almost time to unpack those festive decorations. Redbubble have been expanding their range, so in addition to cards and prints they also have throw pillows, phone & tablet cases, duvet covers, stickers, hoodies and tote bags. Jump across to Redbubble and have a look.

The end of year is also the time of year when we start to plan menus for the various events. Being a home cook putting together menus for functions is a little hobby of mine and I get a lot of enjoyment seeing people enjoy the meals. Planning a menu is essentially a balancing act of colours, textures, temperature, flavours and lead time.

Over the years I've learnt to:

1) Go with the flow of the season and subtly adjust the dishes accordingly
2) Pick a main dish or meat type and go from there.
3) Think starter, main, sides and dessert
4) Mix and match: throw in a handful of store bought items. No need to do all the work.

When putting together a menu keep in mind the old adage 'less is more' a well planned simple to prepare menu is often more appetizing than lots of different contrasting flavours. Prepare as much as possible in advance, give yourself the best opportunity to enjoy the event as well. I've put together a Party Menu Planner, it's a printable PDF.

Out of the Blue

It's hard to believe 12 months has passed since the release of my first calendar "A Gathering of moments" For this years release "Out of the Blue" I've drawn inspiration from the sky. I love to explore how objects/nature contrast and interact with the blue backdrop. Both calendars are available to view and/or order through Redbubble

just black, just white

If it made a black or white mark then it could be used. Inspired by the blocking out and filling in exercise featured in Steven Aimone's book Expressive Drawing. White and Black acrylic paint and charcoal were the starting materials and as the paintings evolved black permanent pen and white chalk pens were introduced. Totally enjoyed the process and working with this style, the three images are available as prints through redbubble.

a gathering of moments calendar

a gathering of moments

I've put together a collection of photos into a calender. Three of the photos have been taken on a couple of trips  we have enjoyed throughout Queensland. The other ten photos have been taken as part of my photo a week project - each week I take photos just around our home and yard an exercise of discovering creativity in everyday routine & surrounds. Search through the pages of the calender at mels redbubble gallery

very happy with my redbubble

When I created my Gallery Store through redbubble I ordered a couple of things. I wanted to touch and see the products. Well I picked up my order from the postoffice on Tuesday and I love them. They have turned out so well. I orderd a couple of my images and had them printed onto greeting cards and also a matted print.

Redbubble is designed for artists of various mediums to be able to display their images in an online gallery for people to view, enjoy and have the option to order the images onto various products like - greeting cards, matted prints, framed prints, t-shirts, canvasses etc. I'm vey happy with the quality of the products that have arrived.  Visit Mel's Redbubble Gallery  There is an amazing selection of artists galleries to enjoy.

finishing off and new discoveries

My New York
This week has been a finishing off and new discoveries week. I finally finished sewing the bottom half of my rod pocket down on "My New York" wall quilt. The quilt currently has pride of place on my studio wall.

I also quilted another quilt that was inspired by the saying 'The writings on the wall'. I'm aiming to finish sewing the binding and rod pocket on this weekend and of course take a couple of photos.

My new discovery for the week was while I was surfing the net as you do, I stumbled across a website called Redbubble which is a website for artists. Basically you create your own gallery shop of photos or scanned images and depending on the quality of the image (they have very good instructions to point you in the right direction) your creation is able to be applied to greeting cards, stretched canvass, prints, posters, t-shirts and calendars. Anyway I'm still learning as I go but I have managed to put together a little gallery (baby steps). I've really enjoyed browsing through some of the other artists galleries as well, so many talented people and lots of wonderful artistic eye candy to browse through.
