Scavenger Hunt - we Broadstroke girls set out in teams of two to collect/draw/photograph/list a series of inspirations/items.

West End & South Brisbane the area of exploration.

Teams were encouraged to think outside of the square and interpret at will.

 So with our page of items, we set out to find or interpret at will items such as mail, text, old vs new, architecture, 

street graffiti/art, ghoulish, travel, sound & map a part of our walk.

What a fabulous way to re-visit an area I frequent - to pause, to see all the levels of inspirations, culture and history this area holds. We gathered for lunch at one of the local cafes and shared our discoveries - a very inspirational day.

pencil tin challenge

   one discarded pencil tin was cut, drilled and trimmed

We Broadstroke girls had another little challenge - create something with the discarded pencil tin. We each had a tin and we each created something quite different. I was particularly drawn to the colors of the pencil image and used this as my inspiration when gathering together materials and ideas. 

On Saturday 31st August 2013 a collection of our challenges and works will be on display as part of 

the Inner City Circles biennial show - Quilt & Textile Temptations at

Milton State School, Bayswater Street, Milton 10am-3pm

we 'Broadstrokes' are featured in Down Under Textiles

We formed as a group a few years ago, initially as a critque group to push and encourage each other in our artisic pursuits and we've evolved from there, it's a nice feeling to feature together in an article in the current issue of Down Under Textiles.

There are six of us in the group, Merody Buglar, Kathryn Iliff, Jane Rundle, Kate Osko, Suzanne Marshall & Myself and we usually meet once a month. There's always lots of show n tell, sharing of projects or techniques and we often engage in mini-workshops trying out various techniques we've seen in magaizines and / or books.

We've also worked on joint projects such decorating a tree for the Jumpers n Jazz festival last year, enjoying day trips to the country, working with Tricia Smout as part of her residency at the Mt Cootha Botanical Gardens to name just a few. I've featured a few of our projects here on my blog and bundled them together in a link, pop across and have a look. The current issue of Down Under Textiles is filled with lots of creative inspirations including an article on fellow artist and friend Chris Jones featuring her FloodArt Postcards.

A few of us Broadstroke gals and partners headed out to Tarome today for a creative playday

had a wonderful day catching up, sharing stories & ideas, a bit of sketching,

capturing the texture of an old fence post and this magnificent gum tree onto fabric, 

 and of course enjoyed capturing a few more photographic moments

bundle project - 4 months on

In April we (the Broadstrokes) in collaboration with Tricia Smout as part of her artist in residency program at the Mt Coo-tha Gardens embarked on our bundle project. We each assembled three bundles, one bundle hung in the Mt Coo-tha Gardens, one bundle hung at home and the third bundle was buried in our home gardens. My bundle at home hung on the side fence, it's quite an exposed section of the garden.

The buried bundle was the one with the most dramatic change. Even the worms had started to move in.

We have chickens so our garden does get quite a bit of organic matter. 

Using the bits n pieces from our bundles we will now each make an A3 size signature for a collaborative book and an individual item/book. They will be on display in November as part of Tricia's end of residency exhibition. Tricia currently has an international call for participation in an Air-Mail Envelope Project and a Focus on Nature Project - full details on how to participate are here

a visit to the botanical gardens, Mt Coot-tha

Enjoyed a visit to Tricia's Exhibition this afternoon. Tricia is the 2012 Artist-in-Residence at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Mt Cooth-tha. Tricia standing in front her "Flowers of Friendship" project.

and then map in hand I enjoyed a stroll in the gardens in search of bundles. 

Throughout the residency Tricia is working collaboratively with several groups, friends & artists. 

And we the 'Broadstrokes' collaboratively with Tricia are doing a bundle project - Integrate / Disintegrate

brekkie + book

Spotted & purchased this delightful book this morning while at Riverbend Books & Teahouse having brekkie and coffee with the Broadstroke girls. The book is called 'Baking Day' and is a collection of retro baking recipes and vintage craft put together by the Women's Weekly and published by ACP Books

The recipes and the craft projects appealed but what I really loved is the presentation. 

The illustrations, photography and layout is delightful and very inspiring.

                    

bundle project

 Three bundles-nine artists-one collaborative project - we the "Broadstrokes & our honorary members" in collaboration with Tricia Smout have created bundles of stuff as part of Tricia's 12 month artist residency. Three bundles each - one to hang in the residency gardens, one to be hang in our respective gardens and one to be buried in our respective gardens. In June the bundles will have their initial presentation and then again in November, only this time as a piece of finished artwork.

We the Broadstrokes had a wonderful time on Saturday rubbing our way around Cleveland with our honorary member - Sue Dennis. Cleveland is a bay-side town in the Redlands district and our wonderful Kate had visited the area during the week to scope it out for textures. So armed with fabrics and oil sticks we went on a rubbing adventure around Cleveland and Raby Bay.
